Agriculture & Food-tech

Traceability, agricultural sensors and cold-chain with post-quantum crypto

EU Regulation 2017/625 and Farm-to-Fork require lot-to-lot traceability for the full product life. Origin records, veterinary treatments, cold-chain must be auditable and tamper-proof. Agricultural devices (soil sensors, RFID readers, temperature probes) are LoRa/NB-IoT low-power — they cannot use heavy RSA. PosQuantum brings PQC to the low-power world and validates chains of custody with signatures that survive Q-Day.

Three scenarios where PosQuantum acts

1

Soil sensors + precision irrigation

Context

Agricultural cooperative with 3,200 ha across 8 farms. 14,000 sensor fleet (moisture, pH, salinity) on LoRaWAN, central gateway on NB-IoT to cloud.

Risk

LoRaWAN 1.1 uses AES-128 with pre-shared DevKey. Compromising one gateway exposes all sensor keys. Adversary can inject fake readings to trigger over-irrigation → crop loss.

PosQuantum solution

PQSL Embedded-C in gateways (stack < 90 KB) handles PQC handshake with cloud. Each sensor keeps standard LoRaWAN AES-128, but gateway applies a PQ layer between gateway ↔ backend. PUCE Storage saves historical readings with signed manifest per agricultural season.

2

Cold-chain traceability (meats/dairy)

Context

Logistics operator for major retailer. 2,800 refrigerated trucks + 64 warehouses. Temperature reading every 60s, per-pallet RFID.

Risk

HACCP and ISO 22000 require 2-5 year record retention. If the digital signature is RSA, a future adversary can forge historical records and fake cold-chain maintenance.

PosQuantum solution

PUCE Archive signs daily record batches with Ed25519 today and Dilithium3 on SDK upgrade (versioned signerKeyId). Each monthly archive ~400 MB compressed, offline-verifiable by DG-SANTE auditors.

3

B2B agricultural commodities marketplace

Context

Digital platform linking cooperatives to industrial processors. 1,400 transactions/day, values €10k-€800k, forward contracts.

Risk

Digitally signed contracts (eIDAS QSCD) today use RSA-2048. If Q-Day arrives before expiry (contracts span 2 harvests), legal validity is questionable.

PosQuantum solution

Dual signing (RSA + ML-DSA-65) via PQSL HybridSignature. PUCE Archive keeps contracts and addenda with PQ chain-of-custody. GraphQL API protected by PQSL Express middleware.

Reference architecture

1

1. Field sensors

Standard LoRaWAN (AES-128) — low cost, low power.

2

2. Gateway PQ

PQSL Embedded-C on gateway (Raspberry Pi / industrial): PQ handshake ↔ backend.

3

3. IoT Fleet

Managing 14k+ devices with licenses, OTA, and revocation via /admin/fleet.

4

4. Historical store

PUCE Storage + PUCE Archive for long-term traceability.

5

5. B2B layer

PQSL middleware protecting marketplace / ERP / SAP API.
